Matt graduated from Loughborough University with a degree in product design. Following this, he joined Bristan Group where he was Design Lead prior to joining HD. Whilst at Bristan, Matt worked on products such as thermostatic mixing valves for the healthcare industry along with taps and showers for the commercial market.
This week, Matt discusses where he finds his inspiration, why he joined HD, how his first month with us has been:
I became interested in how things worked from a very young age; I went through a phase at the age of 6 or 7 where I would take my Dad’s screwdriver and try to take everything in the house apart (including a TV unit which my parents weren’t too happy about…).
This lead to me completing an engineering course at college followed by a product design degree at university. Since then, I’ve pursued a career as a Design Engineer.
I like to immerse myself with clear ideas – be it in design, music, or art. I like anything that makes me think deeply about how something has been created. This helps me consider how a design problem may be solved in an unconventional way.
What attracted me to the role is the fact I get to do what I love whilst also producing designs which could make a real difference in someone’s life.
I’m still just scratching the surface, but I’ve enjoyed getting introduced to the process and the standards related to medical devices.
I’ve had a great time so far! I’m learning a lot whilst also applying my current skillset. I’ve been involved in a few projects so far, from designing precise jigs to creating product renders. It’s exactly the variety I was looking for prior to joining HD.
I enjoy going fishing, bouldering, golf and playing guitar (although I mostly only get time to think about doing these things!).
